XTOOL D8 vs Autel MK900

Published

The XTOOL D8 and the Autel MaxiCOM MK900 are both aimed at advanced DIYers and small shops that want more than a basic bidirectional scanner. This page compares the XTOOL D8 V3.0 and its wireless sibling the XTOOL D8W with the Autel MK900BT, the current Bluetooth version of the MK900 in our guides. Every spec comes from the Amazon listing for each tool, and anything a listing does not mention is marked Not stated.

Spec comparison from the listings

Specs come only from each listing. Prices are listing prices at the time of writing and change often.

The D8 V3.0 is the closest price rival to the MK900BT. The D8W listing describes itself as the wireless version of the D8S with topology mapping, so it is the closer match if wireless use is the reason you were looking at the MK900BT.

Diagnostics and active tests

All three tools scan all available systems, read and clear codes, show live data and freeze frame, and run active tests. The D8 V3.0 listing describes testing components such as fuel pumps and radiator fans, graphical data and pre-scan and post-scan reports to compare the car before and after a repair. The MK900BT listing describes OE-level diagnosis of ECM, TCM, PCM, ABS, SRS, BCM, A/C and BMS with Auto Scan 2.0 and 3000+ active tests. The D8W lists 4000+ active tests.

Pre-scan and post-scan reports are useful for showing that every module is clear after a repair. Active test counts are maker figures, so check each maker's coverage list for the tests on your vehicle. See what a bidirectional scan tool is for how these tests fit into diagnosis.

Note.Active tests move real parts. Keep hands, tools and loose clothing clear of fans, belts, wipers and windows, and follow the conditions the tool shows before each test.

ECU coding and advanced functions

Coding is the clearest difference. The D8 V3.0 listing states coding and adaptation on BMW, VW, Audi, Porsche and other compatible vehicles, PMI on supported Ford and Lincoln vehicles, and guided procedures on VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda. The D8W lists ECU configuration on Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Mitsubishi to change features such as the seat belt chime, plus PMI.

The MK900BT listing does not mention coding. If you plan to adapt replacement modules or change vehicle settings on supported makes, the XTOOL tools are the ones that state it. Read what ECU coding is first, and see our ECU coding tool guide for more options.

Note.Coding changes how a module behaves. Back up the original settings when the tool offers it, keep the battery voltage stable with a maintainer, and if you are unsure, leave coding to a professional.

Wireless use, topology and protocols

The MK900BT uses a V150 Bluetooth VCI that its listing rates for 33 feet. The D8 V3.0 listing does not mention a wireless connector. The D8W uses a Wi-Fi VCI and adds topology mapping, which shows all modules in a color diagram so you can see which ones have faults or are not communicating.

All three list CAN FD and DoIP, which many newer vehicles need. The XTOOL listings also state FCA AutoAuth for secure gateway access on newer Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles. For more cable-free options, see our wireless scan tool guide.
