U0101 code: Lost communication with TCM
Published
Short answer
U0101 means another module, often the engine computer, stopped receiving messages from the transmission control module (TCM) on the vehicle network. Common causes are low battery voltage, a blown TCM fuse, a bad ground, damaged network wiring or connectors, and less often a failed TCM. Expect limp mode or shifting problems, so fix it soon.

This page is for drivers who pulled U0101, often with harsh shifting, a stuck gear or a blank gear display. U codes are network codes: they say one module cannot hear another, not which part failed. We explain what U0101 means, the symptoms, the causes in a practical order, how to check power, ground and the network with a scanner and multimeter, and when to call a professional.
What U0101 means
U0101 is a generic SAE J2012 network code: Lost Communication With TCM. The U means network, the 0 means it is a generic code, and 101 identifies the transmission control module as the module that went quiet.
Modern vehicles connect their modules on a network, usually a CAN bus. Each module sends regular messages. When a module such as the engine computer expects TCM messages and stops getting them for a set time, it stores U0101. The TCM itself may be fine; the problem can be power, ground or the wires between them. The code decoder breaks down any U, P, B or C code.

For P codes: 4 means auxiliary emission controls

Symptoms of U0101
- Check engine light and sometimes a transmission warning light
- Transmission stuck in one gear or limp mode
- Harsh or delayed shifts
- Gear indicator blank or showing dashes
- Speedometer or cruise control problems on some vehicles
- Several other U codes stored at the same time
Common causes of U0101
Power and ground problems are common and cheap to check, so start there.
| Cause | How to check | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Weak battery or poor battery terminals | Test the battery and charging system; clean and tighten terminals | Charge or replace battery, clean terminals |
| Blown TCM fuse or relay | Check fuses for the TCM in the owner's manual or service information | Replace fuse; find the short if it blows again |
| Bad TCM ground | Voltage drop test on the ground circuit | Clean and tighten the ground connection |
| Corroded or loose TCM connector, or water intrusion | Inspect the connector and module for fluid, water or corrosion | Clean or repair the connector; fix the leak |
| Damaged CAN wiring | Check network resistance and voltage at the DLC per service information | Repair the wiring |
| Aftermarket device on the network | Disconnect remote starters, trackers or other add-ons and retest | Remove or reinstall the device correctly |
| Failed TCM | Only after power, ground and network test good | Replace and program the TCM |
How to diagnose U0101
- 1
Do a full system scan with a tool that can reach the transmission module, and save every code. A scan tool that only reads engine codes may miss the picture.
- 2
Check whether the scanner can talk to the TCM at all. If it can, the problem may be intermittent; look for related P codes and freeze frame data. If it cannot, focus on power, ground and network.
- 3
Test the battery and charging system. Low voltage is a common cause of U codes across many modules.
- 4
Check the TCM fuses and relays.
- 5
Inspect the TCM connector and grounds. On some vehicles the TCM is inside the transmission or in an area exposed to water; check the service information for the location.
- 6
Check the CAN bus. With the battery disconnected, resistance across CAN high and CAN low at the OBD2 port is commonly about 60 ohms on many vehicles; confirm the spec for yours.
- 7
Disconnect aftermarket electronics and retest.
- 8
Only after these checks pass, suspect the TCM. Replacement often needs programming with dealer-level or professional software.
Note.Disconnect the battery before unplugging modules, and follow the service information. Some vehicles need relearn or programming after battery or module work.
How to fix U0101
Fix what the tests found: a battery, a fuse, a ground, a connector or a wiring repair. These solve many U0101 codes. If the TCM must be replaced, it usually needs programming to the vehicle, and on some vehicles a transmission adaptation relearn as well.
For network and transmission work, a scanner with full system coverage is worth having. See our guides to bidirectional scan tools and professional diagnostic tablets. The ABS, airbag and body codes stage covers other module codes.
Can you drive with U0101?
It depends on how the car behaves. If the transmission is in limp mode or stuck in one gear, drive slowly and only as far as needed to get it repaired. Poor acceleration can make merging and highway driving unsafe.
If the code is stored but the car drives normally, it may be intermittent. Still have it checked, because a weak connection often gets worse. See can you drive with the check engine light on.
Related codes
U0100 is lost communication with the engine computer, and U0001 points to the high speed CAN bus itself. A transmission range sensor fault sets P0705. An internal engine computer fault can show as P0606.
Frequently asked questions
Does U0101 mean my TCM is bad? Not necessarily. Power, ground, fuses and wiring are common causes. Replace the TCM only after those test good.
Can a bad battery cause U0101? Yes. Low voltage can make modules drop off the network and set U codes.
Can I clear U0101 myself? You can clear it with a scanner, but it will return if the communication problem is still there.
Does a new TCM need programming? Often yes. Many TCMs must be programmed to the vehicle, which may need dealer or professional software.
